Cycling in the Belgium landscape

This bike & barge holiday combines the countries of Belgium and the Netherlands in a very surprising and attractive way. In eight days you will cycle from Brussels to Amsterdam. On your arrival day the barge stays in Mechelen, which is about 20 minutes by train from Brussels. The next day you have time to visit the beautiful Belgian capital of Brussels. The Flemish port town of Antwerp is one of the highlights of this tour. Belgium is famous for it’s tasty beers. They say you don’t really know Belgium without tasting some!

Crossing the Dutch border you reach the well preserved fortified town of Willemstad. In the old town of
’s Hertogenbosch, the St. Jans cathedral is certainly worth a visit. Across Holland's fruit garden, the Betuwe, and along the rivers Vecht and Amstel you cycle to Amsterdam.

Standing at the Dam Square in Amsterdam the Market Square in Brussels seems miles away!

Daily Itinerary

The "Tijdgeest" is one of the barges used on this tour. Classified as a Standard barge it has 14 cabins with bunk beds, all with their own facilities and will take up to 34 people. In the saloon where meals are eaten there is an "honesty" bar. You help yourself to wine, beer or soft drinks and record what you have taken so that you can pay at the end of the week.

We use an operator in Holland for these holidays, and as they sell to other agents in Europe such as ourselves it is likely you will have a mix of different nationalities on this tour adding to the cultural enjoyment.

Day 1 Saturday: Arrive in Mechelen, 6 miles (10km).

Arrival in Mechelen, which is approximately 20 minutes by train from Brussels. Your tour leader will invite you for a small trip on your bike in and around Mechelen.

Day 2 Sunday: Sightseeing in Brussels.

Today you take the train to give yourself enough time to visit all the highlights of the Belgium capital of Brussels. In case you become hungry or thirsty, try one of the culinary specialties: mussels, chocolate, waffles and of course beer. Early afternoon you take the train to Antwerp and rejoin your barge. In the evening you will be tasting some special beers in a typical Belgian bar.

Cycling in Belgium - WindmillDay 3 Monday: Antwerp to Tholen.

In the morning your tour leader will guide you to the centre of Antwerp. There you will have enough time to visit the Rubens House, do some shopping or to relax at a sidewalk café. A sailing trip from Antwerp across the Dutch/Belgian border to the peninsula of Tholen in the province of Zeeland.

Day 4 Tuesday: Tholen to Willemstad, 28 miles (45km).

The cycling trip leads you to Tholen, going pass the village from where the parents of the American president Roosevelt lived before emigrating to the USA, to the walled town of Willemstad, where you spend the night. A historically important fortified town, the old town walls are in the shape of a seven-pointed star and it is here that William the Silent built a palace.

Day 5 Wednesday: Willemstad to 's Hertogenbosch, 28 miles (45km).

You disembark in the town of Geertruidenberg for your cycling trip to the charming capital of the province of Noord-Brabant: 's Hertogenbosch.

Day 6 Thursday: 's Hertogenbosch to Vianen, 25 miles (40km).

You leave 's Hertogenbosch and sail to the town of Tiel, situated in the Betuwe, the 'fruit garden of Holland'. Here you start cycling across some fine Dutch landscapes and visit the town of Wijk bij Duurstede. The trip ends in Vianen where you stay for the night.

Day 7 Friday: Vianen to Amsterdam, 19 miles (30km).

After a sailing trip the barge stops in Breukelen. From here you begin your last cycling stretch: enjoy the rural scenes of tiny villages along the banks of small, winding rivers that lead you towards the Dutch capital Amsterdam. In the evening you have the possibility to make a short guided city walk and a round trip of the Amsterdam canals.

Day 8 Saturday: Depart from Amsterdam.

It is the end of the tour and so it is time to say farewells, exchange contact details and make your way home.
